Hi and welcome to my website! In this section I let you know a little more about me – my background and how I’ve ended up doing what I do…..
I was born in Nottingham in the early 60s and, from my earliest memory, was smitten by the sights and sounds of the traditional fairground. I loved the colours, the smells and the exciting atmosphere. I have no doubt that this was where my passion for traditional fairground décor and rock n roll music was born.
My pocket money was spent on paper and felt tip pens and I would sit for hours drawing and colouring pictures of fairground rides and vehicles.
In my teens, I met a local showman, Billy Warwick and after discussing my passion for art, he allowed me to paint one of his lorries. When money was discussed I just asked for the chance to work on one of his rides and when he agreed…I was away.
While holding down a full time job, I spent my spare time developing my traditional decorating ‘style’. This was influenced by the work of the famous fairground decorator, Fred Fowle and although Fred is no longer with us, I like to feel that his work still lives on through my work.
Also, in those early years, some friends and I formed a rock n roll band, in which I played drums. The band was quite successful with several tours. The ‘line up’ changed over time and I played with bands such as Southern Bound, The Preachers, The Sonic Aces and the Orbitors. I even have my photo on the front of a CD or two!
Over several decades, I worked by day and pursued my passions for producing traditional fairground décor and for playing music by night. And finally when I was made redundant in 2005, I decided to ‘go full time’…this time I was really away.
Over the years, many vintage rides and vehicles have received the ‘Gary Bignall style’, including a number of speedway arks, dodgems, a rotor and many others and although no longer playing in a band, visitors to my workshop will still notice that my love of rock n roll lives on, with the sounds of rock ‘n’ roll, rockabilly, doo wop or glam rock being played at ‘full volume’.
So that’s me – now pursuing my childhood dream and hopefully leaving a little piece of Gary Bignall ‘legacy’…I hope you enjoy the site and the examples of my work you’ll see on the accompanying pages. Please feel free to drop me a line with comments or maybe your own memories of days gone by….and music from the travelling fair wafting across the fields or market squares… |
